An absolutely enthralling story of Nathaniel Bowditch, who went from an indentured servant as a teenager to one of the most well-known and brilliant men who changed the course of navigation (pun intended).

Excellent historical fiction. All ages from elementary through adult will enjoy and learn. Based solidly in fact.

This is one of our family's favorite read-aloud books. It is a great lesson on taking your education into your own hands and being persistent.

Very inspiring story of a young man's journey to better himself as well as an interesting glimpse of sailing in the 1770's.

My son and I did this as a read-aloud. We both enjoyed it, and he was particularly struck by Nate Bowditch's life, so different to that of most people.

Loved this book. It is a great book about self-education, drive and determination. I read it to my homeschooled girls ages 12,9,7 but all kids would enjoy it. I still like reminding my girls to "sail by ash breeze."
