An very interesting story. The main character is both sympathtic and exasperating (as 10 year old girls often are). The book really explores how rumors about a person can affect lives.

Very well written story that takes place in the early 70's about a young girl in upheaval; her family falls apart at the same time that a particularly horrendous crime occurs to a boy who lives on her street. These separate events become intertwined in her mind. Definitely recommend this--especially good if you lived through this period as the politics, etc will resonate.

This is an outstanding book and, I believe, a first novel for this writer. It is an example of how imagination can run wild and ruin an innocent person and also hurt the person who spread the rumor. It takes place during the Nixon years in Washington and reflects the paranoia of that administration.

This was a very sad story, but I couldn't put it down.

A novel that stirred me up a little and left me in a reflective mood after finishing it after two sitdowns.
It's not just about the horrendous crime that was perpetrated against a 12 year old boy, but also about the seventies era, what was going on in our country at the time, and what was going on in the mind of the ten year old girl whose voice we are hearing throughout. I was spellbound by it. I think many others would enjoy it too.

I first found this book interesting because it takes place when I grew up, and still live. Even though it is fiction, a lot of it rang true. The only real problem I have and this maybe petty, is what I think is a glaring proof reading error. A police officer in the book has his name changed . He is only mentioned twice, and is not a major character at all, but that kind of thing drives me crazy. It would have received four stars except for that error. That aside, this is a fascinating study of life in a suburban neighborhood in the '70's. The effect that a Dad leaiving his family has on not just the wife, but the children too. How a young girl sees the world, and how it sees her. Read this one very quickly.
