Lovely illustrations, accurate text, and excellent layout and format. A truly beautiful book! Compact for all of the information it has in it, a handy size to carry around. Bigger than a hand guide, but not too big and bulky.

"The book of North American Birds is a winner: attractive, informative, unique, thorough - the ingredients a successful bird book needs, woven around all original art by some of the world's greatest and best known bird artists! The hundreds of illustrations make me hunger to see the remarkably beautiful animals they represent so well, both those I already know, and those I have yet to meet in person."

This book celebrates some 600 species. More than 450 of them in the Gallery section, which is divided into eight groups according to type and habitat. Each page page features a full color painting, usually of a male in breeding plumage. The portrait is accompanied by text that is meant to be not so much an ornithological profile as a brief essay or narrative-- sometimes focusing on a key aspect of the bird's behavior, appearance, or lifestyle, sometimes simply evoking the delight of glimpsing in the wild. At the bottom of each page in Gallery is an information capsule for quick reference, with details on identification, habitat, nesting, and food. Also color coded maps indicate a birds summer range, as well as winter ranges or where it may live year round. Following the main section, is a special collection of more than 100 species that are rare or have limited ranges in North America.
Finally, The Traveler's Guide will be of practical value to anyone looking for good birding sites in the U.S. and Canada. Excellent book
