WWI in England and the populace is enraged with naturalized Germans and antisemitism is also rife. Scotland Yard must deal with a murder as a result of a rampaging London crowd looting and burning out businesses with German or Jewish names. A fascinating historical mystery.

This was a solid historical mystery set right after the sinking of the Lusitania. Set in London, the story introduces us to Scotland Yard Inspector Harvey Marmion and his assistant, Sergeant Joe Keedy. After the sinking of the Lusitania, there was a backlash of violence targeting German Jews who had emigrated to London. Upscale tailor is murdered during a riot at his shop, and at the same time, his daughter Ruth is raped. The case is a good one, trying to find our of Stein's death was a result of the fire in his shop, or was it a premeditated crime? I very much enjoyed the main characters in this story, looking forward to reading more in this series.
