I am not sure how I feel about this book, it wasn't as exciting or engaging as the Hunger Games Series, and I wonder if it is because of the preconceived opinion I had of President Snow. I did like learning how the Hunger Games came into being.
He was the main character and you went along with him from age 18 to 19 I am assuming, so one year of his life and how that made him into what he is but I don't think that is true, he was a calculating self important, power hungry Society family from the Capital through and through.
I had a problem with the timeline though, if it was the 10th anniversary of the Hunger Games and he was 18 at that time and in the Hunger Games it was the 74 and 75th hunger games that means he-President Snow would be 83 years old and he just didn't strike me as THAT old in the books/movies

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins tells the story of Coriolanus Snow who grows up to be President Snow in the The Hunger Games trilogy. It's been many years since I read the three books or watched the movies in the original trilogy. Sequels, prequels, and accompaniment stories rarely ever captivate as much as the original. That is certainly true of this one. It does not capture the uniqueness or the intensity of The Hunger Games. Am I glad I read it? Yes. Will I likely follow along? Yes, for the story and for the trip down memory lane. Will it have the same impact as the original? No.

Oh how I loved being immersed in this world once again! A young Coriolanus Snow is our protagonist and at times, he is almost likeable. We get his backstory and some understanding of who he is. We also learn much of how the Hunger Games developed into what they became. In this 10th year of the Hunger Games, the Academy assigns a mentor for each of the 24 tributes being sent into the arena. Snow is assigned the girl from District 12 (basically the bottom of the heap) and he feels humiliated. However, his tribute, Lucy Gray Baird, is full of surprises and becomes a beloved favorite most are rooting for. Some really fun characters in this one. It was exciting and brutal, surprising and tender, then cold and scary, as well! I absolutely loved every minute of it!

While this book wasn't a page-turner and I was able to put it down for days at a time, I did enjoy it. I looked forward to picking it back up again, if only for a chapter. At times it had me laughing, filled with love, angry, and at other times I was crying.
If you're looking for a book that's going to grip you around the throat and not even let you breathe until you're finished -this isn't the book. If you're looking for insight behind the villain of The Hunger Games, if you're looking for an MC who will drive you up the wall if you're looking for deep and well-written characters, this is it. This is the book.
