I really enjoyed this novel. I hadn't read anything by Adichie before but certainly plan on checking out her others. An engrossing book with extremely honest (and at times uncomfortable) observations on race in the U.S. My only complaint was the ending, which I found abrupt; nevertheless, I would rate this book as highly recommended.

Moving, thought-provoking and beautiful story.

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie travels from Nigeria to the United States and back again. The book has a strong premise of a young woman's experience of immigration and the learning of racial divides. I loved its observations on the immigrant experience. I did not care as much about the main character or her love story. This leaves my overall reaction somewhere in the middle, but the book was the basis for a great book club discussion.

Just ok...Took me awhile to get through it.

Goodness, this book is dreadful. The main character is so steeped in hypocrisy, the story is so bland and one-sided, the narrative jumps around and throws you off every time, each and every white character is a racist, each and every person of color is not, yadda yadda yadda. If I wanted to be lectured about how white people's ignorance is the reason for all of the problems in the black community, I would just read a CNN article. But no, I am forced by my bookclub to endure this nearly 600 page book.

It took me awhile to get into this book, but once I did I found it very interesting. It really made me look at the world from a different perspective.
