I alternately laughed and cried through the whole book. You could pick it up as a standalone, I guess, but it would not have the same impact. For me, the mystery was very much secondary to the main characters. As far as the mystery goes, I didn't guess whodunit, but I knew the answer to the question that popped up a few times, so that was satisfying at the end. Maybe it was supposed to be obvious. But it's the relationships between the characters that I love the most. Joyce's journal entries are so good. I just don't remember the plots of books like I used to, and I would make a bet that a year from now I don't remember the mystery in this one, but I will remember what's happened to Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim. Looks like Osman is taking a break from this series for a different novel, and I'll be looking out for that.
