Unfortunately, the author tried to explain Beethoven's genius to us laymen (with no music training). I didn't think it went well. While the author was talking about the history of music, things were fine. When the info moved to music theory and such, I was lost. One interesting thing this book expounded on was the fact that Beethoven was the transition between the Classical Period of music and the Romantic Era. It was also surprising to learn that in Beethoven's day, music was considered a science. After Beethoven's nephew died, the family line died out. I've decided to try another publisher's study of Beethoven -- for comparison. Overall score = 3.5 stars.
