This book reads like fascinating fiction; Black Bart was a mysterious, interesting guy who left much to the imagination. I like the fact that the story told the known facts and told where the facts were sketchy. BB, the 'gentleman bandit' broke the mold for being a thief and dandy. He abandoned his wife and children while he stole and dressed to the nines.

The fact that he never shot a gun or stole from the passengers, didn't make him less a thief; it just made him a less dangerous one to the people he met while robbing. He was such a gentleman that after he was caught he served a lesser time than his sentence demanded. Finally, after prison, Black Bart slipped into the mists of history. This is a great story, and it was well-told. It kept my attention and interest throughout.
