As soon as cuneiform tablets were found on the site, the archeologists realized they had missing links that would clarify much about Near East living in the 2nd millennium BCE. The "Mari Archives" show that for a short time (about 100 years), there was no more important city-state in the Near East.

After the Babylonian King Hammurabi captured the city, it was eventually deserted and abandoned. When archeologists in the 1800 - the 1900s found frequent mention of Mari, no one had any idea of its locale or size.

This wasn't a very interesting story; there were few photos to add to the explanations. This was a disappointment; I expected more.
