At the end of the first book, Alina and her best friend Mal had escaped the Darkling and were in hiding. But, soon they are found, and make their way back to Ravka.
Alina is torn and wants the impossible, to be both the young peasant girl that Mal loves, and to be the powerful Sun Summoner who saves her people from the Darkling.
