Although I knew the Nazis stole millions in their art thefts across Europe, this book went back and gave the history of conquerors deciding that they had earned the art of another nation by winning conflicts with them. Sometimes, the art was sold to pay reparations to the winner (for the cost of the conflicts). The Nazis had a different view. They stole art, selling off what they considered 'degenerate' and keeping for their personal collections works they liked. They also moved works to German museums.

However, there were groups at work trying to restore the art to its original owners and institutions. This is a fantastic story -- and one that is rarely mentioned.
