This is an amazing book; who knew that woolly mammoths were really elephants? Every couple of pages has another jaw-dropping piece of information about this extinct species. The first US-originated mammoth mass of bones was found in Vermont in 1848. By the end of the 20th-century, woolly mammoth carcasses had been found in sinkholes, kettle holes, mud, tar pits, and other amazing places. The photos in this book are exceptional and plentiful.
Thomas Jefferson was convinced that the woolly mammoth was endangered and in remote pockets of North America, still, he was convinced they were yet roaming the earth. Various Native American tribes insisted the woolly mammoth existed well into the 18th and even 19th centuries.
So that the reader can see just how revolutionary this story is, I'd like to quote the last sentence. "As of early 2019, scientists believe that the world could be as little as a decade away from resurrecting the woolly mammoth." All the latest scientific tools have been used with the mammoths -- carbon dating, cloning, DNA, CT scans, etc. This is a great book; I recommend it.
