This gothic family saga turns into an interesting detective story. It is very slow-moving at times, but beautifully written.
A very good social history of the Fens (a swampland district of eastern England.)

I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It's better not to read the back cover before you read the book, one of those books to go into blind. It is a mite depressing.
