First, thank you, Charles Rivers Editors, for providing such excellent illustrations to go with this book. I particularly liked the map depicting Pangaea over time and the Velociraptor and Deinonychus scale model compared to humans. These offer a way for readers to assimilate the bounty of knowledge this book provides. Essentially, the author is talking about vast periods. So, with some yardstick, it is easier to understand.
Of course, much of what is shared is supposition based on considerable study and analysis. Every time I read one of these books about ancient land and ocean history, I grow a little in understanding.Â
I'm always fascinated by the latest theories about "the great dying." In just a few short years, scientists have created more realistic theories about how and why so much life on Earth suddenly ended. The explanation of why the reptiles died is both simple and sublime. They died when the Earth cooled. Since they had no way to heat their bodies, they had no way to feed themselves, procreate, or survive.
Another intelligent thing this author did was to refer back to Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, a wildly popular book and movie. Since so many people saw the movie or read the book, connecting new ideas to this shared experience was easy. The author explains that Chrichton used reptiles from other eras to heighten the drama in his story. This eBook's author explains that the real Velociraptor was no larger than a turkey. It also lived in central-eastern Asia in a different era than the Jurrasic Period.
