I loved this book. It's an irreverent yet practical take on parenting young children. The author emphasizes maintaining sanity while living in a world of Barney the purple dinosaur by recognizing that you're raising future adults and stressing the need to maintain an adult life. When it seems the whole world is instructing you to shower your beautiful baby with repetitive knick knack paddywack songs until you can't dream without this old man strolling through your head, Mellor suggests a selection of child-friendly adult music from bluegrass to beatles to opera. A sassy and fun read for the new parent and single hipster alike.

I laughed enough that I would recommend this book to any frazzled parent who needs a little support and a giggle over some of the frustration we feel as parents, especially those feelings that the child has taken over your life.

If I were to categorize the humor, I'd call it "Facetious with a grain of truth." For example, they discuss how impressed others will be with your well-behaved children (once you've trained them to make martinis and serve cocktails at your parties). Now this is of course, totally ludicrous, but the grain of truth is that your family will be well-liked if your kids behave. Also poked fun at are child protection devices, battles over food at the table, and the refusal of some parents to discipline their children.

However, I agree with the other reviewer that this is definitely NOT a book for someone who does attachment parenting.

Some very funny parts. All in all, this is not the book for those who adhere to the co-sleeping/around the clock breastfeeding/ my child is the center of the universe set. It is geared more for the Babywise set. I found some of her comments extremely humorous - others seemed a little snyde. It is a tongue-in-cheek irreverent look at parenthood and amusing in its way.

This book is very tongue in cheek. It's great if you are sick of reading more practical parenting books that don't seem to be quite applicable to your child, values and/or circumstances. It's pretty funny. (I almost photocopied some of the cocktail bearing kiddo pics to use as clip art on my kid's party invitations.)

A laugh out loud book. Great for the parents who have not pre-registered for preschool and such. A more lax parenting than some of the scheduled parents we see today. A great book for the new mom.
