This is the story of how Rome never really conquered Scotland. After some time, the Romans realized that the cost did not justify the poor benefits of dominating the Scots. We don't know if Rome gave up because of the ferocity of the Caledonians (the Romans called them this) or whether there weren't enough resources in Scotland to plunder.
There's a great discussion on the how and the why of Hadrian's Wall and Antionne's Wall. Another interesting point was regarding fighting. The Scots soon learned that frontal fighting with the Romans was a poor gamble. So, instead, they took to guerilla fighting and were far more successful in thinning the Roman forces. Overall, this is an interesting survey of the interactions of the Romans with the 'barbarians' they found to the north of the Britons.
