I took this book off my wishlist after checking it out at the library. In my opinion, there are better and more extensive books out there (and in my personal library). Gives some recipes and some crafts. Even tells you how to milk a cow - though, again, you would need to buy a more specific book if you wanted to actually raise animals. There is some good information, but the other books in my collection cover most, if not all, in much more detail. Not for the serious homesteader or even hobbyist. For a little bit of everything (that also goes into more depth), one would be better getting Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living.

I agree with the previous reviewer- this book feels really underdeveloped. There are a few bits of helpful information, but it mostly seems like it was writen by and for the urbanite pioneer-wannabe.

I wanted this book for awhile but when I got it.... lame. The "projects" seemed to me to be kind of boring and the instructions were very simplistic. It suggests embroidering a haystack on a towel or pillowcase. But there's not design to trace which would be pretty standard for embroidery.
Then some projects that didn't seem very prairie girl to me... make night cream, create calling cards. Just didn't really turn out as fun of a book as I expected.

This is a really fun book filled with ideas and some history about what girls would do on the prairie in the 1800s. I truly hope to try quite a few of the projects mentioned in it. There are many things from how to make rock candy, how to make candles, rugs, quilts, natural remedies, embroidered details to towels or pillows, wildflower crowns, how to go sledding, how to groom a horse, how to milk a cow, etc. Loads of fun.
