Fascinating history of camels in the United States during the 1850s, and of the (often important) people and events associated with them. Plus it is an easy and entertaining read.
As far as the title---The Last Camel Charge---I'm not sure that is accurate, as camels were still used in warfare elsewhere, even during World War I in the Mid-East.
The details of the camels amazing service as pack animals and mounts almost makes you want to bring them back for that use. However, I do remember a time, when backpacking in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, I and my buddy encountered some of their cousins---lama---which were being used as pack animals by other backpackers, or were they lama-packers?
While reading this book I was reminded of James Garner's movie "One Little Indian," in which he played an Army deserter who fled with two camels.
