First, I love Charles Rivers Editors' publications; they are usually well-thought-out and provide lots of information in a small space. It is a valuable resource, no matter what you are studying. However, this isn't one of their best efforts. The story had nothing wrong; I wish they had spent time explaining "Jacobites." In Latin, James is Jacob. Thus, this is the story of how the supporters of King James, the Jacobites, tried to get their deposed King James II back on the throne. King James II was supported by Catholic clans of the Scottish Highlands.
When Charles II died, James II, a Catholic, was next on the throne. However, his religion made him unliked by the multitudes, and the people asked William of Orange and Mary to take the throne. Thus, the Jacobites (supporters of James II) began a long-term conflict to return the Stuarts to the throne. Towards the end, someone states that Bonny Prince Charlie was the only royal to really try to get the throne back, and a lack of funds and soldiers thwarted him.
