This 400+ page book has two novellas. In spite of the image on the front cover, these are contemporary stories.
SNOWBOUND WITH THE BODYGUARD (Carla Cassidy) This novella is book 6 of an eight part series by this author (see below for the list). In a word, I thought this story was average. There seemed to be too many coincidences; the similarities between what happened to Janette and Daltons mom were just a bit too much.
Janette Black is running from the man who raped her a year before; when he found out she had a son he started harassing her because he wants the boy. The rapist has 3 girls with his wife.
Hes a powerful man in the town where she lives; she knows that if she doesn't disappear with her son, he will convince others that she (as trailer-trash) will be unable to meet her childs needs.
Janette gets to a town 30 miles away and is waiting for the bus; a blizzard starts and theres nowhere for her to stay. The only business still open is a personal protection service and Janette asks Dalton West to protect her and her son for the night, until they can get on the bus the next day.
GLORY, GLORY (Linda Lael Miller) This novella is a stand-alone story that was originally published in 1990. This is about a girl (Glory) who made a mistake in high school and suddenly left town. Shes back ten years later and immediately runs into her old flame, Jesse Bainbridge, who is the town sheriff.
Hes never known why Glory disappeared; he assumes his grandfather bought her off. They are both bitter people. Glory soon hears that Jesse is getting ready to present an engagement ring to the owner of the local beauty shop.
Unsure of her desire to stay, Glory meets an old friend after Jills practice at the church. While watching, Glory suddenly realizes that one of those children is the daughter she had to give up when she was 18. Liza runs up to Jesse after practice and Glory is beside herself with rage and grief. Suddenly, everything has changed.
This is a very readable story with too many coincidences. This story is better written than the Snowbound one but the male lead in Snowbound is smarter and more likeable. I wondered about Jesse's ability to stay calm in a disaster related to his job; he seemed to be someone with his emotions on his sleeve.
