This story is a pleasant diversion. It is well-written with a mix of romance and mystery. Jack Eliot becomes the reluctant Earl of Stansworth at the death of his grandfather, a man whom Jack loathed (because of his poor treatment of his son and his family). Jack is likable but he longs to return to the sea. He only takes the mantle of Earl so that his mother and sister will be taken care of.

Lady Ivy Carlyle is introduced to Jack to teach him how to be an earl. Having spent most of his life aboard a ship, Ivy has her work cut out. The only thing that surprised me was how often Ivy attended evening entertainment without being presented to the Queen (first). I thought young debutantes were restricted until presented.

The plotline flows well and it keeps a nice pace. I enjoyed it.
