This looks like her first book. Great characters, good story well told. As a cat lover and former pet sitter, I really got into this one. Not quite a thriller, but not quite a cozy read either. I hated to put it down. If you like animals, you will probably like this.

Much better than I thought it would be - I thought it would be a fluffy little light read, but there was a lot more to it than that - characters were well-drawn and interesting, lots of action and tidbits about animals.

The Publishers Weekly blurb on the back called it a cozy. I would definitely NOT call it a cozy.
I really like the book. Kept me guessing along with Dixie. I gave it FOUR stars and look forward to reading more in the series. (when my current TBR shrinks a bit)

Dixie Hemingway starts out with you wondering what happened..and by the end of the book she's your new best friend..or one you would like to have.
Was a twist I never saw coming in the book..and if you don't get tears while reading parts....
This writer has it all..can't wait for the next books!

A friend here saw my review of "How to Wash a Cat" in which I bemoaned the wishy-washy, spineless, personality-less main character, who was an accountant. (I'm a CPA--we are NOT like that!) Anyway, I didn't much care for that book. What my friend told me was that I ought to try this book, which coincidentally has cats in it as well as a competent accountant (a minor character). This main character, she said, is not spineless, colorless, or anything-less.
OK, I'm up for a book as nicely recommended as that. I ordered it and read it the same day it came in. I usually don't do that. In fact, I had three other books that I was reading at the time. (If you must know, one is in my briefcase that's with me all day; one is in my bathroom at home; and one is on my nightstand. I pick up whichever is handy....)
I LIKED this book. It is compelling, hard to put down, and realistic. It's sort of cozy, but not really. The main character is sympathetic, competent, and smart. I like those things. She is not a wimp, not someone who thinks cats are people, too (a sure way to get me to stop reading and immediately relist the book for trade), or in any other way irritating. Yippee!
Without my friend's recommendation, I would never have ordered this book. Cat-sitter? Definitely not my cup of tea. Titles, however, can be misleading. (Didn't someone once say something about judging a book by its cover?)
From the healthy attitude about pets to the raw emotion of having lost a daughter, from the healthy curiosity to the mostly common-sense way she thinks, from beginning to end, I liked Dixie Hemingway. I could have done without the three (I think it was three) F-words in the book, but they were in fact said in an appropriate context of emotional outbursts when even old fuddy-duddies like me might at least think them.
Read the book. It's good.

I loved this book, and am enjoying the 2nd book in the series right now. This is a great cozy read, but it has a lot more depth than many cozies you pick up! Definitely put this one on your to read list!

This was the first book I've read by this author, and I really enjoyed it. She had me guessing until the last few pages, which is not usually the case. Her characters were intriguing and fun. Her descriptions of places made you want to go there, and her descriptions of food made you want to eat that sandwich. Looking forward to the next read.

The first of the Dixie Hemingway pet sitter series. Dixie became a pet sitter after the death of her husband and daughter. A former sherif's deputy, she know quite a few of the local law enforcement members and always seems to stumble over a dead body. Great characters.

What a fun series!! And Blaize Clement makes the area come alive. She makes you want to be a cat sitter in FL!!! Her cast of characters are totally believable.

1st in the series of Dixie Hemingway, a pet sitter. If you enjoy books about aniamls and mysteries, this is a good book. I can't wait to read another one of the series.

A nice cozy - headstrong ex-cop heroine who now runs a pet sitting business. This is not brain drain material but rather a good airplane or day at the beach read. In this, the first of a new series, Dixie finds a dead man face down in a cat's water bowl. With the local cops at a loss, including the handsome detective who catches her eye - she decides to clip a leash on a lead or two and go sleuthing herself.

Editor fell asleep and let two inconsistencies remain. One is Dixie walking a dog she is pet sitting, yet she 'parks' behind a vehicle once she arrives and walks to a car window. Parks what?
There are words that appear to be thrown into the story to garner it PG-13 or R rating as if it were a movie trying to appeal to a wider audience. I saw no good reason to drop in a description of her deli lunch pickle, nor the way the AC cooled her down earlier. It felt like someone said, you must add this, it'll spice it up. It did not. Or someone edited out bunches of that, in which case, I'm even less impressed.
The cat information seemed like little helpful tips, and the story did appear to be about a woman finally coming to terms with the loss of her husband and daughter in a positive way.
I was not impressed overall and would not spend a PBS credit to get another book by this author.

Solid writing and a good story line made this book a pleasure to read overall. Look forward to reading more of the series. Four stars is about right.

Really enjoyed this book. A little more depth than a cozy; characters are well developed and likable: I find myself looking forward to seeing how Dixie will grow in the next book. Plot was well developed; writing was good although some of the foul language wasn't needed (not a lot of foul language) : I'm looking forward to the next book. Going to keep this one for a while; read it again; it may actually make it to my keeper shelf.

Ignore the chick-lit title; this is not a fluffy book. It's a nice little mystery with a well-developed heroine. Once a sheriff's deputy, a family tragedy leaves her stunned and earning her living as a pet-sitter when one day she finds a body..... I enjoyed this book and have the next two en route from PBS.

This is a great start to a series about a pet-sitter. You get a chance to meet a bunch of fun characters in the Keys, Florida. Dixie has had many things happen in her life, but things are finally coming together for her. It's a fun read!

This book is about a pet sitter who has lost her family (husband and young daughter) to a tragic accident. She lives close by her brother and his partner. The story is about a murder that she discovers in one of her client's homes and her trying not to get too involved, but of course, she used to be in the sheriff's department, so she ends up getting involved after all. A main character is a young gay man who she befriends and tries to help save from his conservative parents. It is a gay friendly read. There are also explicit descriptions of sexual photographs she finds in the course of her search for the killer. This is something I would have liked to have known before I ordered this book.

The first book in a new cozy series (at least new for me), Dixie Hemmingway is an ex-deputy who lost her husband and daughter in an accident, and now has a pet-sitting business. Trouble starts when she finds a dead body at one of her clients' homes. While I found the twists and turns confusing at times, this is a good solid mystery. One victim's Jekyll-and-Hyde personality kept throwing me off but was still plausible, and the resolution was satisfying. Characters were pretty well rounded, even the animal ones. I would be interested to read the second book, but not sure yet if this is a keeper series for me.

I enjoyed this new series and new author. Glad to know there are more books to enjoy in the series. Kept my interest (I didn't cheat and read the last few pages) and although I kind knew who-dun-it there was a nice little twist at the end :)

This book had a decent & at time page-turning plot. Though there were a few obvious mistakes that Dixie Hemingway (if a real seasoned ex-investigator/police woman as written) wouldn't have made(like feeding a cat before she called 911 after finding a dead body, allowing the cat to sully the crime scene). It was a very fast moving & easy read. The ending & some of the plot were a bit far fetched, as other reviewers have mentioned.
The thing I didn't like about this book is in one chapter the main character is bad mouthing friends who told her that her husband and daughter were, "with Jesus" after they died.?! The author at times seems to have some bigotry towards Christians. Also, if you're conservative about foul language & sexual preferences you might be offended. So, even tho I liked the pet sitter aspect of the book I wouldn't read another of the series.
