Because I read a great deal of history, I wondered about the story behind the Chisholm Trail. This book satisfied my curiosity about this famed passage from Texas to Kansas. The author explains that there were many branches and individual trails, but after a while, people referred to all of the trails as Chisholm.
At the end of the Civil War, there was a need for more beef on the Eastern Coast. The Chisholm Trail was viable for less than 20 years before the East restocked their farms with cattle and trains spread to Texas to meet demand. But during the trail's heyday, Abeline alone raked in $3 million per year.
Besides Jesse Chisholm, a Scot-Cherokee trader (not a cattleman), Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, and countless others traveled over the pages of history via the Chisholm Trail. Overall score = 4.5 stars.
