Has anyone else noticed the numbers (I've highlighted below) under the listings of books (when you order from someone)? I don't remember seeing them before so was wondering what they meant?

Look Alive Twenty-Five: A Stephanie Plum Novel (Large Print)
Author: Janet Evanovich
ISBN-13: 9780525631842 - ISBN-10: 0525631844

1063275664

Yes, they were there yesterday and today.

Also I'm seeing this garbage accross the very top of the screen - so repairs need to be made.

SELECT *, WEIGHT() * (1 + 0.05 * LOG10(requested + 1) + 0.15 * posted + 0.05 * in_market) AS relavance, WEIGHT() as weight FROM book_info, book_info_delta WHERE MATCH('(@(authors,title,publisher,isbn,description) swami)') ORDER BY relavance DESC LIMIT 0, 1000

The ISBN numbers have always been there.  I don't know about the stuff at the top of the page though I have never seen that.

I don't see any of that. It sounds like page-display hypertext which should not show up on a webpage as it is 'behind the scenes'. I wonder if the coding to interface with some browsers hasn't been updated or is glitching. I am using Chrome on my desktop and Safari on my ipad and have not seen anything like that in either place. Which browser are you using when this shows up? If you contact PBS, let them know the pages where it's happening, are you just viewing a page or is coming up when you try to click on a button, etc. and what browser you're using so they can look into it.

Could that be the request ID number??

That number that prints under our name in the address section when we print the wrapper to mail the book.

Do not recall seeing it when I requested anything, though.  Will pay attention on this next order.

Carol - Yes, I saw that stuff across the top of the page also. It's still there. Thought that because the site has been down for over 5 hours and it's still slower than anything, that they'd been working on it. At least I've been able to print labels (slowly) to send some books out, and hopefully will be able to mark them mailed when I get back. Take care. Pat

I don't see what Carol saw. And  the request ID is under my address on the right side of the page.

I am seeing these numbers also as well as the lines of code across the top of the screen but have only noticed them when doing a search for a title.

I finally asked TPTB and it was part of a programming fix and they forgot to remove them. Pat

Has anyone notice the drop in number of books available.  I recall at one time the number to be 3 million.

Any ideas on how to draw new members to this site?

Even though there are fewer books available, there are fewer duplicates too. I remember posting books that had hundreds of copies and knowing it would be years before a request for them came in. With postage so high it's almost $4 to send a single book. Still much less than a new book of course, but it can still add up. I personally think membership is very worth it, but I'm a very dedicated member and have enough TBR to allow me to 'play the long game', which is what it takes if you want a good return on swapping. Though not everyone may be able to find as many books or specific books they want or be willing to wait the wish lists for years. As far as generating more memberships, maybe there should be more of an incentive for long-term trading or better marketing to make the book club more visible.

"...With postage so high it's almost $4 to send a single book."

I just printed off Media Mail postage for a 7 ounce paperback. For only 54 cents more I could have sent it First Class. Media Mail isn't such a deal anymore.

I still believe the U.S. Postal Service is the most efficient U.S. government agency. Which is probably why DeJoy and Congress are doing their best to destroy it.
