Having seen Gaudi's opus, the Sagrada Familia Basilica (although I saw it in the late 1980s), I was excited to find a book on such an influential Spanish architect. He has a one-of-a-kind style; once seen, one doesn't forget it. Thus, I was disappointed that the author of this book did not spend more photos on his art (and less on people). I guess he would be called the father of Catalan Modernism.
It is interesting to see the change in attitude regarding Gaudi. When I was there in the 1980s some locals still considered him to be a bit loony. However, his art has put Barcelona of the map of important places to visit, and the attitude has changed.
What I knew about Frank Lloyd Wright would fit in the eye of a needle, but this book is fascinating. Did you know that Wright designed the hanging water closet partition that is in virtually every restroom in the world now? The partitions are suspended so that cleaners can clean restrooms easily. Wright never took out a patent for any of his innovations and inventions, according to his son.
My only criticism of this section is the same as the first. I would have enjoyed having more photos of Wright's prairie-style homes in the book. I read this in front of the computer, so I could see all of the buildings discussed. Otherwise, the information was great.
