Until about 200 years ago, there was no way to understand Egyptian writing. Ancient Egyptians wrote both demotic and hieroglyphs. Then a French soldier found the Rosetta Stone, which had Greek text, and two scrips of the Egyptians. It was a large stele inscribed with important victories or decrees. Ptolemy V wrote this text in 196 BCE.

Ptolemy was a Greek ruling Egyptian. He tried to act Egyptian, but the population wanted their lands ruled by an Egyptian. Thus, he had to deal with uprisings. So, the Rosetta Stone is a primary source of events in Egyptian history. In addition, this tool helped scientists unlock the language of ancient Egypt.
This book is very entertaining about the code-breaking efforts of a Frenchman and a British subject. Unveiling the meaning behind the Rosetta Stone has inspired a whole world of Egyptologists worldwide. Overall score = 4.5 stars.
